This week we made some more biscuits.  Ziggy was almost completely out of the Flea Buster Bones as we’d had a bit of a run on people buying them and I’ve also given some little bags away as gifts to a couple of friends with dogs.

He’s begun to look at me sadly when I take the lid of the container and he can see there’s not many left.  I’d found a recipe for Plaque Buster biscuits.  Hard biscuits with cereals in the scrape the teeth.  Surely better than those commercially available and very expensive bones.  We’ve never given one of these to Ziggy who I’m sure would take his time over eating them, however Kep use to “crunch crunch and gone”.

The little food gobbler himself – Kep at about 12 weeks

I’m also bored of the little bones we’re making so I found a lovely little heart shaped cutter – just right for telling my dog how much I love him.

We worked through the normal problems.  Over sloppy dough, inaccurate cooking times etc, that seem to come with with sourcing dog biscuit recipes and adapting it until we got something that rolled out in some fashion.  Hey presto! Well more like an hour later we have over 100 beautiful little heart shaped biscuits.

The verdict? Well, you’ll have to ask Ziggy, but he does tend to take the biscuit and run off to find somewhere quiet to eat it or rather I like to think of him as savouring it.

Once again the weekend is here and its a long one.

Saturday morning is dry so we decide to head off up to Bosley Cloud.  It was Kep’s favourite walk, and is soon becomming a Ziggy favourite too.

Its a short sharp pull up to a cairn with fabulous views over Cheshire to Congleton and Staffordshire to Rudyard.  The Heather is out at the moment and it looks beautiful.

It might well be dry in Leek but there was a big black cloud over The Cloud so we had lots of fun getting wet and muddy and then trying to clean our-selves off in the Heather or at least Ziggy did. It was a strange light today – the sun was trying to come through and even in the rain it was beautiful.  Good for the soul!

We’ve had a couple of sales on Ebay for the basic dog biscuits so need to head back to go to the post office and of course its still dry in Leek.

Ziggy in the heather – happy dog!

We had a baking session today – some flea buster treats to keep the fleas and the ticks at bay.  We did them in a bit of a rush and somehow Ziggy managed to set the oven temp wrong.  They’re a bit beyond golden!!  Zig doesn’t mind, he thinks they have extra flavour and as we obviously can’t send them out to customers he gets to keep them all for himself.  Yummy!!

Lessons Learned and a bit of Baking July 17, 2011

Dog school again tonight.  Week 2.  Of course our heel work has improved immensely and Ziggy holds his head up really high and proud as he sticks to my left hand side.  He’s learning really quickly although we did manage to disrupt the whole room when we did a retrieve.  I rather misguidedly picked out an interesting squeaky toy out of Fred’s box of tricks.  Ziggy was really pleased with it and very keen to go and get it on the command ‘bring’, but just wanted to play with it – oh and what a lovely noise it made ‘eeeeeeeeeehhhhka eeeeeekkkhaaaa eeeeeerrrrkaaaa’.  I was nearly bowled over completely by the 5 or so other dogs that so wanted that toy.  Well, that’s a lesson learned.

Ziggy hiding on the stairs

Tonight was my first attempt at commercial dog biscuits.  I needed to test the market so I’ve advertised them on EBay.

Of course I have made them before with no problems, but after the excitement of receiving my first order, my kitchen is soon turned into something resembling Santa’s grotto in Greenland, with a light dusting of flour – and me?  I looked like the Pilsbury Dough Boy.  Why is it that when it really matters things start to go wrong?

Anyway, I persevered and I have 63 beautiful little doggy bones to show for my efforts.

Ziggy of course couldn’t wait for the taste test.  He grumbled something as he munched through the first one.  “Graa naaah naah” – I googled a translation – “More more more!”.
